What is Wi-Fi 6?
With faster internet speed constantly in demand, especially as the world consumes increasing levels of bandwidth via apps, fames and videos with our laptops and phones. However, the next generation of Wi-Fi, isn’t just a simple speed boost.
Wi-Fi 6, often referred to as AX Wi-Fi or high-efficiency Wi-Fi, offers further connectivity improvements. Designed to help improve Wi-Fi connectivity in highly dense environments, including shopping centres, highly populated residential areas and office locations, Wi-Fi 6 offers further benefits to individuals and businesses alike. Released in 2019, IEEE 802.11ax uses the standard 2.4Ghz and 5GHz bands, with the 6GHz band to be introduced in Wi-Fi 6e. Wi-Fi 6 isn’t all about reaching the top speeds, instead of being focused on boosting the speed for individual devices, Wi-Fi 6 is all about improving the network when multiple devices are connected.
There are several advantages of using Wi-Fi 6 including:
- Devices lasting longer. Devices that operate using Wi-Fi 6 networks can often last longer, as connections are automatically switched off when not in use, meaning the device goes to sleep. This can be incredibly useful when IoT devices don’t need constant Wi-Fi activity.
- Better performance. Wi-Fi 6 can provide better performance on both single and multiple devices. This is one of the biggest advantages of Wi-Fi 6 – providing better wireless performance in dense and congested areas compared to Wi-Fi 5.
- Wi-Fi 6 is backwards compatible with existing mobile devices meaning that users do not need to worry about changing and replacing their devices to benefit from the new technology.
Whilst there are many advantages for moving to Wi-Fi 6, businesses have their hesitations, often linked to the below considerations:
- It involves a high cost of installation and devices when you purchase smartphones and laptops with Wi-Fi 6 technology. Wi-Fi 6 is yet to be widely adopted, even if your wireless router supports both Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6, it’s likely that it will automatically opt for Wi-Fi 5 at this time, as many devices to not support the newer standard as default. To make the most out of it’s advantages you may need to upgrade devices and parts of your infrastructure. With Wi-Fi 6 compatible devices generally being more expensive.
- It has a relatively short range of connectivity. – Wi-Fi 6E routers are restricted by automatic frequency control to keep from interfering with outdoor 6GHz broadcast signals.
